Do I need a referral from a doctor to be eligible for a bulk billed sleep study?

Bulk Billed Sleep Study Criteria
A valid doctor referral is required to be eligible for a bulk billed sleep study.
You will also need to demonstrate a high probability for symptomatic moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) based on the questionnaires below:
Epworth Sleepiness Scale
You must score 8 or more to qualify.
STOP BANG Questionnaire
You must score 3 or higher to qualify.

Q: Is a sleep study covered by Medicare Australia?
A: An individual is eligible for a bulk billed sleep study (i.e. no out-of-pocket expense) if they have been referred by a Sleep and/or Respiratory physician.
Alternatively, if they are referred by another medical practitioner (i.e. General Practitioner, another medical specialist), they can still be eligible for a bulk billed sleep study if they meet the following criteria:
- Valid Medicare card;
- Valid referral from your doctor;
- Patient must be 18 years or older;
- Patient must not have claimed another Medicare funded sleep study in the past 12 months
- Patient must score 8 or higher on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and 3 or higher on the OSA-50 Questionnaire.

Q: What if I’m ineligible under Medicare for a bulk billed sleep study?
A: If ineligible for a bulk billed sleep study, the same sleep study (level 2) can still be conducted for $600 out-of-pocket. Alternatively, a more simplified sleep study (level 3) can be conducted at a cost of $100 out-of-pocket.

A: Medicare guidelines allow for 1 home-based sleep study per person annually.
Q: Can I commence CPAP treatment without a sleep study?
A: There is no requirement to have a sleep study before commencing CPAP treatment. However, it is strongly recommended that anyone looking to commence CPAP treatment should speak to a first.

Q: What happens after a sleep study?
A: Once your sleep study has been completed, the sleep study data is reviewed and reported on by an Australian accredited Respiratory & Sleep Specialist.
Once your sleep study has been sent to your referring doctor, you will be notified of this and recommended to speak to your referring doctor about your results. You will also have the opportunity to have any questions you may have answered.
